Welcome to the Visualization Department of HLRS. Our mission is to support engineers and scientists in the visual analysis of data typically produced by simulations on high performance computers. The increasing complexity of simulation models and size of datasets resulted in longer analysis times. Instead users want to comprehend fast the meaning behind datasets and get insight into their simulation models. We provide visualization methods and technologies to reduce analysis time. Improved analysis possibilities are offered by immersing users into visual representations of their data and allowing them direct interaction with the data. An essential means for this is the integration of processing steps into a distributed software environment hiding heterogenous hardware platforms.

Services

We maintain a Visualization Lab (VisLab) as well as a Virtual Environments Lab (VELab) and support clients in their usage. A variety of software tools are offered on the machine platforms of the labs covering scientific visualization, image aquisition and manipulation, basic graphics, 3D scene modelling, software development, etc..

A Video Editing Studio is used to provide video production and animation services in close cooperation with customers.

In addition the central output facilities of large format plotters, slide recorders and high quality color printers are maintained and operated.

We are also starting to offer VR-services related to visualization using our new CUBE projection environment.

Services are complemented by coordinating the aquisition of visualization and graphics software and consulting in their usage.

The major parts of these services are currently covered by six people from the staff and student support workers.

Research and Development

Many requirements of a visualization department in a high performance computing environment can't be fulfilled by commercial off the shelf tools. Thus we are involved in research and development activities together with external partners, to develop tools or improve them. In addition we give support and consult in introducing new tools or working modes. Thus we simplify the access to HPC resources for widely distributed users and enable better cooperation between partners. Improved capabilities of engineers and researchers in gaining insight into complex simulation models in turn raise the quality of HPC usage. These activities are persued by externally sponsored research and development staff together with student support workers involved in dedicated projects with cooperation partners. For more information about our research and development activities please visit also our project page.

Covise

As a major result of our research and development activities the distributed software environment COVISE has been developed. It is our main software platform for further developments in the fields of distributed processing, collaborative working, direct steering of supercomputer simulations and virtual reality interaction with simulation results. COVISE stands for COllaborative VIsualization and Simulation Environment. It is available on Unix workstations from different vendors, on Linux-based PCs, and supercomputers. It is optimized for network based distributed working. A successor of COVISE called YAC is currently under development. More information about COVISE is available here.
